IPL 2019: Shreyas Iyer happy with underdogs tag as Delhi Capitals reach playoffs

first_imgDelhi Capitals became only the 2nd team after Chennai Super Kings to qualify for the playoffs of the 2019 Indian Premier League after they brushed aside Royal Challengers Bangalore at the Feroz Shah Kotla on Sunday. It was a special moment for a team which has had to endure several heartbreaks over the last 6 seasons.Re-christened Delhi Capitals before the start of the season, the team was focussed and determined. They had a nightmarish time in 2018.Gautam Gambhir stepped down as captain after a poor start to the campaign. Shreyas Iyer had played a handful of matches for India but the team management had no other option but to hand him the reins of captaincy.Delhi responded better under Shreyas Iyer but they still finished last in the points table with only 5 wins from 14 matches. The tables have turned in 2019. Delhi Capitals are top of the points table with 2 matches left.Delhi Capitals had last reached the playoffs 7 years ago after finishing on top of the points table with 11 wins from 16 matches but it all went south for the next 6 seasons. In 2013 and 2014, DC finished last. In 2015, Delhi Capitals were 7th in the points table, moving to a slightly more respectable 6th in 2016 and 2017.Therefore, the playoffs berth this year means a lot to a team which has struggled to get its act right. And Delhi Capitals have stormed into the playoffs – they did not have to depend on the net run rate and the results in other matches.”This is an amazing feeling. Before the start of this season, we had the intention and everyone was inspired to make it to the playoffs. That was our first job. We have done that so really satisfied,” DC skipper Shreyas Iyer told the broadcasters after the match.advertisement”We just keep talking before every match that we will play as underdogs. That’s what we were tagged as before the tournament started.”We are going to just maintain the same intensity and mindset. It just makes us fearless and we have nothing to lose and yeah, the commitment and motivation we get to see on the field is overwhelming and makes me really happy,” Iyer said.In 2018, it was all about Rishabh Pant but his belligerence wasn’t enough as Delhi Capitals finished last. This year, Pant has been brilliant too but Shreyas Iyer and Shikhar Dhawan have led the charge. Dhawan is, in fact, the second highest run scorer this season and he was named man-of-the-match for a classy fifty.”Very happy with the man-of-the-match award. Did not really expect it but happier with the fact that the team is now No.1 and we are going to celebrate tonight and look forward to winning the next 2 games so we can stay on top,” Dhawan said. Also Read | IPL 2019: Delhi Capitals beat RCB to reach playoffsAlso Read | IPL 2019: Virat Kohli promises expressive cricket from RCB in their final two gameslast_img
