Denvers Marijuana Czar Reflects on Running Americas First Legal AdultUse Weed Market

first_imgLegal Marijuana Green Entrepreneur Podcast Each week hear inspiring stories of business owners who have taken the cannabis challenge and are now navigating the exciting but unpredictable Green Rush. –shares Next Article January 21, 2019 Ashley Kilroy isn’t in the cannabis business but she knows as much about it as just about anybody who is. Bart Schaneman Ashley Kilroy has overseen Denver’s recreational cannabis industry since Colorado launched adult-use sales in 2014. As director of Denver’s Department of Excise and Licenses and the agency’s Office of Marijuana Policy, Kilroy has seen cannabis business owners experience growing pains as the industry has matured.“Being first wasn’t easy,” she said. “We’re proud of what we have accomplished, but we know we have to prepare for new challenges ahead as the marijuana industry evolves.”Kilroy spoke with Marijuana Business Daily about how cannabis companies in the Mile High City have stabilized, what they can do better and what’s on the horizon in 2019.What have business owners learned over the past five years?I’ve seen a stabilization of the industry. A maturation. And a lot of exciting innovation. At the beginning we definitely had a lot of people who were passionate and excited to be at the table and really helpful for us, but they weren’t always speaking with one voice and it was hard for us to come to consensus. We had to have multiple players around the table, from regulators, to the state, to the industry, to community members and health-care partners. At first, the marijuana industry wasn’t as aligned as they are now. So now I think they know more about what they want and what they’re doing. They can deliver that to us government regulators in a more cohesive way that’s easier for us to act on.Related: Here’s What the Average Cannabis Consumer in Canada Looks LikeIs the cannabis business community doing a better job of communicating with your department now?At times I see things getting escalated without people first coming to the source and asking us — with someone being worried about a new change in a regulation or a process or whatever. Rather than just picking up the phone and calling our chief inspector, or calling the deputy of operations or calling the department directly, sometimes I think they’re worried about calling us.When they don’t do that, things get overblown with incorrect information. What should business owners do to avoid a problem like that? We’re always open. Not just our department, but our building department and our environmental health department. Our goal is safety. It is cheaper for the city and our taxpayers if our licensed businesses understand the law and are in compliance than if we have to go out a year later and find they’re not in compliance.Related: This Cannabis Brand Scored A Viral Hit — Thanks To The TSAHow can the business community in a new state or city that legalizes adult-use cannabis help to facilitate a good working relationship with regulators? That’s a great question. A lot of times the industry may complain to me or the mayor about a specific problem. Then, at my weekly meetings, I can call in all the different agencies and say who did X, Y and Z with this and what was this about? What innovation have you seen from marijuana companies? We first started off with the industry trying to learn basic cultivation practices when you’re growing in a fully locked space. Just that alone was very challenging. Now people have figured out best cultivation practices that allow them to grow safely and not use prohibited pesticides. And they’ve learned how to build their hash oil machines so they can extract safely and have safe procedures for their employees. Better food-handling practices. All of those basics were innovative when we first got started. Most of the people in the (infused products) part of the industry knew how to extract hash oil, but they might not have come from a food-safety background and then didn’t know the best food safety and handling practices.Related: How to Start and Market Your CBD CompanyWhat should marijuana business owners be thinking about in 2019, especially in communicating with your department and interacting with regulators?I just ask that the industry continue to be connected to us, continue to call us with questions. One of the things we’ve seen is where the industry starts coming up with some new innovation — that old adage, seek forgiveness, don’t ask permission — and we don’t know what they’ve been doing. All the sudden we find some new innovation and we’re like, “If you would have told us you were doing this, we could have walked this path together and we could have helped guide you with where the regulators might go as result of this.”A perfect example is when we first got started. One of our inspectors had gone in and inspected an extraction facility and said, “You need this certain type of hood.” That hood cost the business $40,000, and the business wasn’t too happy about it.Then, when we went back a year later, their processes had completely changed and they didn’t need the $40,000 hood. They needed an explosion-proof room and a new hood, and that cost a significant amount of money. So, had we known the full extent of what they were doing up front, it would have saved them time and sort of having to retrofit and backtrack in order to keep their employees safe. This interview originally appeared in Marijuana Business Daily. Bart Schaneman can be reached at barts@mjbizdaily.com Denver’s Marijuana Czar Reflects on Running America’s First Legal, Adult-Use Weed Market 5 min read Image credit: Roland Rollinger | Getty Images Listen Now Brought to you by Marijuana Business Daily Add to Queuelast_img read more

CocaCola unveils blueberry acai and strawberry guava Diet Coke

first_imgCoca-Cola unveils blueberry acai and strawberry guava Diet CokePosted By: Contributoron: January 17, 2019In: Beverage, Industries, Innovation, New products, Soft drinksPrintEmailThe Coca-Coca Company has launched two new Diet Coke flavours as it looks to continue the growth momentum from its 2018 turnaround of the brand.Diet Coke blueberry acai and Diet Coke strawberry guava were selected from a shortlist of 20 options and tested with more than 2,000 Americans. The new variants join the existing Diet Coke line-up, which includes: ginger lime, feisty cherry, zesty blood orange, twisted mango, and original.Last year’s brand rejuvenation, which included fresh packaging, sparked a turnaround for Diet Coke, which posted retail dollar sales growth in Nielsen measured channels for four consecutive quarters after at least five years of decline.Rafael Acevedo, group director of Diet Coke, said: “We focused on modernising Diet Coke to appeal to a new consumer base while at the same time connecting with our core drinkers by preserving the essence of what makes this brand so special.“We took smart risks in our approach to this holistic brand restage, and everything worked together to generate excitement and draw new fans to the brand.”He added: “These new flavours are highly incremental to our current flavours and will continue to drive excitement for the brand. Flavour variety is key because it provides more points of entry into the brand. Different consumers have different favourites, so it’s important to offer a range. And we’re finding that when new drinkers try a flavour, they’re also more likely to reach for (original) Diet Coke.”Both flavours are now available in the US in 12oz cans, sold as on-the-go singles and in packs of eight. A nationwide sampling campaign will take place until August, while fresh marketing will launch in the coming weeks.Tara Mathew Sahu, integrated marketing communications director at Diet Coke, said: “Last year’s campaign introduced Diet Coke’s new personality and philosophy. As we enter year two, we aim to show how the brand delivers a refreshing boost to everyday moments. She added: “Many of our newer fans were not even born when Diet Coke first launched in 1982, so they may see the brand as a choice of generations before them. We’re reframing the brand in a youthful, energetic and aspirational tone and showing how Diet Coke can fit into their lives.”Share with your network: Tags: Diet CokeThe Coca-Cola CompanyUSlast_img read more

AntiPiracy Bill Could Do More Harm Than Good for Small Companies

first_img –shares Anti-Piracy Bill Could Do More Harm Than Good for Small Companies Next Article Director of the Entrepreneur Partner Studio A bill in Congress that aims to punish “rogue” websites that publish or sell pirated content could potentially harm small businesses as much as it could help them. The “Stop Online Piracy Act” aims to punish online businesses that host copyrighted content without authorization — including peer-to-peer content sharing sites, among others. It was introduced last month by House Judiciary Committee Chairman, Rep. Lamar Smith (D-TX).So far, the bill has gained support from major entertainment industry players including the Motion Picture Association of America. During a Congressional hearing this week, MPAA senior executive vice president Michael O’Leary argued that these rogue websites negatively affect the revenues of major Hollywood studios as well as the “95,000 small businesses across the country involved in the production and distribution of movies and television.”But while the SOPA bill could provide added protection for some small businesses, such as those in the entertainment industry, those who oppose the bill argue that the potential downsides outweigh the benefits. “While you’re trying to protect people who have innovated in the past by giving them an additional level of protection for their intellectual property, in doing so you risk penalizing the innovators of the future,” says Andrea Matwyshyn, assistant professor of legal studies and business ethics at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School of Business in Philadelphia. “You create a more constrained innovation space in an environment that’s more hostile to IP.”Entrepreneurs — especially those who are or plan to aggregate or remix content, or share content in new ways online — should pay attention to how the SOPA bill plays out in Congress and what the consequences will be, Matwyshyn says. No specific timetable has been set for a vote, she says. This week, tech giants including Google, LinkedIn, Facebook, Yahoo, Twitter and AOL collectively voiced opposition to the bill, writing a letter to the Committee on the Judiciary. As currently written, the SOPA bill would allow copyright holders to obtain court orders to disallow other companies from doing business with the sites that are alleged to be in violation of copyright. It could also force search engines and domain registries to censor the infringing sites. The companies argue that the bill would undermine the intent of the Digital Millenium Copyright Act, which reduces the liability of online companies — large and small — that act in good faith to remove infringing content from their sites.A similar bill, called the Protect IP Act, passed the U.S. Senate earlier this year but was effectively put on hold by Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR), over its potential to “muzzle speech and stifle innovation and economic growth,” he said. When a statute has a “heavy-handed approach” such as SOPA or the Protect IP Act, there is potential that individuals or companies with deep pockets will leverage their legal expertise and the legislation to eliminate the ability of new entrants into the IP space with novel business models, Matwyshyn says. “There’s a relatively clear consensus, in at least some corners of the legal community, that this is not the best way to achieve the goals that Congress is aiming for,” she says. Early Days But Apple Pay Struggles Outside US

first_imgApple Pay Add to Queue This story originally appeared on Reuters Image credit: Justin Sullivan | Getty Images Next Article 5 min read –shares The only list that measures privately-held company performance across multiple dimensions—not just revenue.center_img Reuters Early Days, But Apple Pay Struggles Outside U.S. More than 18 months after Apple Pay took the United States by storm, the smartphone giant has made only a small dent in the global payments market, snagged by technical challenges, low consumer take-up and resistance from banks. The service is available in six countries and among a limited range of banks, though in recent weeks Apple has added four banks to its sole Singapore partner American Express; Australia and New Zealand Banking Group in Australia; and Canada’s five big banks.Apple Pay usage totaled $10.9 billion last year, the vast majority of that in the United States. That is less than the annual volume of transactions in Kenya, a mobile payments pioneer, according to research firm Timetric. And its global turnover is a drop in the bucket in China, where Internet giants Alibaba and Tencent dominate the world’s biggest mobile payments market — with an estimated $1 trillion worth of mobile transactions last year, according to iResearch data.Anecdotal evidence from Britain, China and Australia suggests Apple Pay is popular with core Apple followers, but the quality of service, and interest in it, varies significantly. To use Apple Pay, consumers tap their iPhone over payment terminals to buy coffee, train tickets and other services. It can be also used at vending machines that accept contactless payments.Apple Pay transactions were a fraction of the $84.5 billion in iPhone sales for the six months to March, which accounted for two-thirds of Apple’s total revenue.Tech hitchesIn Australia, where Apple Pay launched a month ago, payment machines supported by one mid-sized bank reported frequent failures.”Bendigo Bank is experiencing some unforeseen technical issues in accepting Apple Pay payments at selected merchant terminals,” a spokeswoman for the bank told Reuters, adding that a lack of wider industry engagement in launching the service limited the lead time in testing the new technology.Apple Vice President Jennifer Bailey said such experiences were premature and not representative. “Like any set of major technology changes, it takes time,” she said. “We want to move as quickly as possible, we push it as quickly as possible.”Facing a slowing smartphone business, Apple has taken on the payments market hoping to add ways to make its devices more appealing, and more revenue streams. Apple takes a cut of up to 15 cents in the United States on every $100 spent. While it has long mastered the supply chain for its mobile devices, the payments ecosystem has proved harder to control, and banks in other countries have reportedly negotiated lower transaction fees, contributing to its slow global roll-out.Apple nearly doubled its R&D spending to more than $8 billion in 2013-15 as it pushed out a wave of new products including Apple Watch and Apple Pay, as well as upgrades to existing hardware devices and new services.ResistanceApple has leveraged its huge U.S. user base to push Pay, but has met resistance in Australia, Britain and Canada where banks are building their own products.”Payments in general is such a complicated system with so many incumbent providers that revolutionary change like this was not going to happen very quickly,” said Joshua Gilbert, an analyst at First Annapolis Consulting. The upshot: Apple has rolled out Pay in a dribble, adding countries and partners where it can — Hong Kong is expected to be added next — resulting in an uneven banking landscape with users and retail staff not always sure what will work and how. In Britain, for example, $14 billion was spent via contactless cards last year, according to Windsor Holden, a Juniper Research analyst. That makes it harder to persuade people to take the extra step on their smartphone for the same checkout convenience.”You have over 86 million contactless cards in circulation, you have to persuade Britons to register their cards to the (Apple Pay) service when they can already use them to make a contactless payment,” Holden said.In Australia, where more than 60 percent of all card transactions are through contactless cards, reception has also been muted. A spokesman for one large retailer said he had seen “very little uptake of the payment option” in his sector. He didn’t want to be named as he was not authorized to speak publicly about the matter.Diego Machuca, 32, banks with Apple Pay-holdout Commonwealth Bank, has an iPhone and is already “largely cashless”. He says Apple Pay is appealing, but he wouldn’t switch banks just to access that one feature. “Not over that. There’s too much work involved just for tap-and-go,” he told Reuters.Three months after the China launch, users on online forums complained that using Apple Pay, even at popular fast-food outlets, was not as seamless as local services such as WeChat, Tencent’s messaging and mobile commerce phenomenon.Nonetheless, Apple’s approach has spurred development in several markets where the mobile payments industry had previously not taken hold — giving it the jump on rivals Google’s Android Pay and Samsung Pay.Android Pay only launched in the United States in March and in Britain last month for use on the latest model Android phones. Samsung Pay is available in three markets; China, South Korea and the United States.(Reporting by Matt Siegel in SYDNEY, Jeremy Wagstaff in SINGAPORE, Eric Auchard in LONDON and Beijing Newsroom; Editing by Ian Geoghegan) 2019 Entrepreneur 360 List June 2, 2016 Apply Now »last_img read more

Verizon ATT Set to Make Final Round of Bids for Yahoo Web

first_imgYahoo! Verizon, AT&T Set to Make Final Round of Bids for Yahoo Web Assets Enroll Now for $5 Learn from renowned serial entrepreneur David Meltzer how to find your frequency in order to stand out from your competitors and build a brand that is authentic, lasting and impactful. This story originally appeared on Reuters June 13, 2016 Reuters Fireside Chat | July 25: Three Surprising Ways to Build Your Brandcenter_img 3 min read Image credit: Reuters | Robert Galbraith –shares Add to Queue Next Article U.S. telecommunications rivals Verizon Communications Inc. and AT&T Inc. are set to go through to the third and final round of bidding in the auction for Yahoo Inc.’s core internet assets, according to people familiar with the matter. After holding a board meeting to review second-round offers, Yahoo will start reaching out to bidders as early as Monday to notify them whether they will make it to the next round, one of the people said.Verizon, the biggest U.S. wireless carrier, is seeking to challenge AT&T, the second largest U.S. wireless provider, in the third round of bidding, even though its latest offer was at the low end of the $3.5 billion to $5 billion range of the second-round bids that came in last week, the people said.Yahoo hopes to conclude the auction by next month, according to one of the people. The Sunnyvale, Calif.-based company started exploring a sale of the assets after coming under pressure from activist hedge fund Starboard Value LP.A consortium led by Quicken Loans Inc. founder Dan Gilbert, and backed by Berkshire Hathaway Inc. Chairman Warren Buffett, will also make it through to the final round, the people added. Some private equity firms that had made it through to the second round will not be invited to submit third-round bids, another of the people said. The people familiar with the matter asked not to be identified because the bids were confidential.Yahoo, Verizon and AT&T declined to comment. A Quicken Loans spokesperson did not immediately respond to a request for comment on behalf of Gilbert’s consortium. Not all offers involve exactly the same assets, with some bidders indicating they are not interested in some of the patents and real estate assets on offer, sources have previously said.Verizon is primarily interested in Yahoo’s advertising technology tools. It has been examining how the other assets up for sale, such as search, mail and messenger services, could be combined with the corresponding businesses of AOL, which it acquired last year for $4.4 billion, Reuters reported last month.AT&T has been seeking to catch up with Verizon in advertising technology as it seeks to expand in mobile video offerings.A sale of Yahoo’s internet assets would leave the company just owning a 35.5 percent stake in Yahoo Japan Corp., as well as a 15 percent stake in Chinese e-commerce company Alibaba Group Holding Ltd., which accounts for most of its value. In December, Yahoo scrapped plans to spin off its Alibaba stake, after investors fretted over whether that transaction could have been carried out on a tax-free basis.(Reporting by Greg Roumeliotis in New York; Additional reporting by Malathi Nayak and Dan Freed in New York and Liana B. first_img July 15, 2016 Swiping right or tapping on a mobile phone are not typical ways of helping poor communities, but a new app launched by a medical charity on Friday aims to use technology to help aid workers map areas at risk of conflict, disasters and disease.Using the latest in mobile gaming technology, MapSwipe lets users map remote, rural regions vulnerable to humanitarian crises.Hundreds of millions of people in crisis-prone communities are not mapped, Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) said, and without this data, aid agencies are unable to effectively plan for emergencies.”If you can’t visualize where your patients are when they’re in the middle of a cholera outbreak you’re missing a huge trick, because you can’t predict the behavior of the disease,” said MSF’s Pete Masters, who helped create the app.Users will swipe through a series satellite images on their phone, and tap the screen when they see buildings, houses or other signs of human activity. In essence, the public can help filter out uninhabited areas, such as deserts or bushland, so aid workers can concentrate on mapping places where people actually live.MapSwipe was developed as part of the Missing Maps Project, a collaboration between MSF, the British and American Red Cross and mapping platform Open Street Map.Masters, project manager of Missing Maps, said having accurate mapping data before a crisis hits is essential.”It’s not a reaction tool,” he said. “What we’re really trying to do is identify vulnerable places (with) ongoing, forgotten crises, and map them ahead of time.”So when the cholera outbreak happens, you’re not trying to map it now, you can say, ‘Here’s the data.’ And you can use it immediately.”The app will let users participate in current mapping projects in northern Nigeria, Madagascar and the border region between Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea which was hit by the Ebola virus outbreak.By rewarding users with virtual badges, Masters said he hopes the app will be as engaging as popular mobile games such as Angry Birds, Pokemon Go or Candy Crush. But ultimately, he said the app is about letting ordinary people participate in humanitarian work, even if they are unable to give money or volunteer on the ground.”We’re trying to provide meaningful engagement for people who have a few minutes to spare,” he said. “We don’t want to pretend maps save thousands of lives — doctors save thousands of lives.”But any increase in the support that we can give to the medical teams in terms of the data they can use … is an improvement.”(Reporting by Lin Taylor @linnytayls, Editing by Ros Russell; Please credit the Thomson Reuters Foundation, the charitable arm of Thomson Reuters that covers humanitarian issues, conflicts, global land and property rights, modern slavery and human trafficking, women’s rights, and climate change. Facebook Ditches Plan for 2 Separate News Feeds

first_img Facebook Ditches Plan for 2 Separate News Feeds March 2, 2018 Next Article Learn how to successfully navigate family business dynamics and build businesses that excel. Angela Moscaritolo –shares Don’t expect Facebook to roll out a Snapchat-like redesign any time soon. Reporter Image credit: Shutterstockcenter_img This story originally appeared on PCMag 2 min read Facebook In what is perhaps a veiled jab at Snap’s new redesign, Facebook on Thursday announced that people don’t want two separate News Feeds. In October 2017, Facebook launched an “Explore Feed” trial in six countries to separate content from friends and family from Page posts; it’s similar to what Snap did with its recent, much reviled redesign. Now, Facebook is scrapping the idea.”In surveys, people told us they were less satisfied with the posts they were seeing, and having two separate feeds didn’t actually help them connect more with friends and family,” Facebook’s Head of News Feed Adam Mosseri wrote in a blog post. “We also received feedback that we made it harder for people in the test countries to access important information.”So, don’t expect Facebook to roll out a Snapchat-like redesign any time soon.”We constantly try out new features, design changes and ranking updates to understand how we can make Facebook better for everyone,” Mosseri wrote. “Some of these changes… work well and go on to become globally available. Others don’t and we drop them.”When Facebook first announced the trial, some were concerned it would cause Pages to see a drop in engagement since people would have to proactively click to access that content. That ended up happening anyway, though, since Facebook in January started showing users more posts from family, friends and groups they are part of, and less content from businesses, brands and media organizations.Meanwhile, Snapchat’s redesign separates content from friends and content from publishers. Since the update went live, users have complained that Snapchat is “too over complicated,” that it’s harder to find friends in the app, and that some contacts aren’t even showing up. In response, Snap recently said it’s planning to add tabs in Friends and Discover that will “make it easier to find the Stories that you want.” Free Webinar | July 31: Secrets to Running a Successful Family Business Add to Queue Register Now »last_img read more
